Friday November 19 10:30 - 11:30 am. The Automobile is American Art, a docent-led tour from The Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM).
Americans love their cars. The super fast ones, the shiny red ones, the convertible top ones, the vintage ones, the loud ones, and of course the ones that simply get us to the grocery store. They often evoke memories of good times, new found freedoms, exciting adventures, and milestones in our lives.
Albert H. Small loved cars too. While best known as a real estate developer in the Washington DC area, he was also a collector of many things, among them, model cars. Mr. Small recently gifted his vast model car collection to the Smithsonian American Art Museum where you can see over 100 of them on display in the exhibit called The Automobile and American Art.
Join us on a virtual tour of this exhibit, learn about Mr. Small and his collection, and then we will cruise through the SAAM galleries to find cars and car inspiration in other works of art. We will find a quiet place to park and talk about cars as works of art - sculptural works of fine art. We can talk about design, how does the car make the viewer (or driver) feel, materials used, the sometimes outrageous costs, collecting and collectors, and more. Then it is your turn. Bet you have a car story. One you owned, one you wish you still owned, a trip you took, something custom you did to your car.
