950: GENIUSES OF AMERICAN SONG: THE STORY CONTINUES
July 11-15, 1:45 PM - 3:15 PM
Online Lecture
This course will continue from previous courses on the geniuses who gave American music wonderful songs through stage and screen. The course will cover Harry Warren who wrote many hit songs for film but is not well-known by the public, and two great writing teams: Bock and Harnick, and Kander and Ebb. The course will cover Oscar Hammerstein and draw on a new collection of his letters. It will conclude with a retrospective of Hammerstein’s great student, the late Stephen Sondheim, who was greatly influenced by Hammerstein, especially in his later work. The course will include many performance clips and interviews as we learn about these great creators of American song. This study group has a high class size capacity.
Study Group Leader:
Dan Sherman has taught several courses on musical theater and film musicals at OLLI, along with many other venues in the area. He holds his PhD in economics from Cornell and recently retired as Managing Director at the American Institutes for Research.
