My Long Friendship with Jimmy and
Rosalyn Carter
with Robert L. Maddox
Thursday, April 13, 1-2:30 pm
Originally from Georgia, local minister Robert L. Maddox will discuss his close friendship of over 60 years with former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalyn. Jimmy Carter was born in 1924 in Plains, Georgia. Peanut farming, talk of politics, and devotion to the Baptist faith were mainstays of his upbringing. In 1962 he entered state politics, and eight years later he was elected Governor of Georgia. Jimmy Carter went on to serve as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981. After his presidency, he established the Carter Center in 1982 to promote and expand human rights, which earned him a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. He traveled extensively to conduct peace negotiations, monitor elections, and further the eradication of infectious diseases.
Our presenter, Bob Maddox, served in the Carter Administration as a speechwriter for President and Mrs. Carter and a liaison to the religious community. An ordained Baptist minister, Maddox also was a pastor of several local churches and the executive director ofAmericans United for Separation of Church and State. He has authored several books including, “Preacher at the White House” and “Separation of Church and State.”
Additionally, Maddox is the founder of the Briggs Center for Faith and Action, a local nonprofit that engages people who share a passion for social justice and serving the disadvantaged. He is a graduate of Baylor University and Emory University’s Candler School of Theology and a longtime member of Little Falls Village.
