One of DC's top attractions for architecture buffs and those with an interest in 20th-century art, this museum is housed in a stunning 1963 International Style building designed by American architect Philip Johnson. There are plenty of masterpieces, including works by Cézanne, Picasso, Van Gogh and Chagall. Also included in the permanent collection are works by prominent Washington artists, including William Christenberry, Gene Davis, Sam Gilliam, Simmie Knox, and Paul Reed. Outstanding examples of African and Asian art are integrated in gallery spaces. The building sits on five acres and is surrounded by gardens and terraces filled with sculpture. After your indoor tour, consider taking a self-guided walk through a visiting exhibition of outdoor work, entitled "Still Something Singing." Presented by the Washington Sculptors Group, this exhibition reflects the role of art in our contemporary moment.
