Highlights of Roman Landscapes:
Visions of Nature and Myth from Rome and Pompeii
San Antonio Museum of Art
Friday, June 23, 11 am–noon
Might the artistic path to landscape painting trace back to Rome—the eternal city? Roman Landscapes is the first exhibition in the United States to explore landscape scenes as a striking new genre of ancient Roman art. The artworks and other objects in this exhibition were created more than a millennium before landscape emerged as an independent subject in the Renaissance. Created between 100 BC and about 250 AD, the works include major loans from museums in Italy, France and Germany never before on view here. Perhaps the most extraordinary aspect of the exhibition is the inclusion of art from Pompeii, which was preserved remarkably intact despite being buried under volcanic ash in 79 AD. With Melissa Varner as our expert docent guide, we will discover how ancient Romans depicted themselves in relationship to nature and “why.”
