About this event

Explore images of great Japanese gardens and horticulture with expert, Holly Shimizu as your guide. Kyoto is home to many Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines that include some of the most exquisite temple gardens in the world. Through the symbolic depiction of nature, their spiritual purpose is to invite the viewer to enter a state of meditative stillness. This in-person presentation spotlights three of the finest of these gardens—Tofukuji, Ryoanji, and Kiyomizu—and examines their meaning and care.

A nationally recognized horticulturist and educator, Holly served as Executive Director of the US Botanic Garden from 2000 to 2014. She currently serves on the Board of the American Horticultural Society and is a host for its tours to Japan, among other places. For over 12 years, Holly was one of the hosts of the popular PBS television show, The Victory Garden.
